They say a picture is worth a thousand words. But how many words is a selfie worth? In keeping with this month’s Vision theme, guest preacher Mariama Onwuchekwa takes a humorous and thought-provoking look at the art of the selfie. There are times when they can uplift, encourage, and offer benevolence to others. And there are times when they do just the opposite. By exploring the evolution of the selfie, we’ll approach a perspective that says: “A church that selfies together, stays together!”

In collaboration with our weekly reading group, Pastor Norm delves into the mystery of the Gnostic Gospels, lifting up their spiritual treasures and exploring the eerily familiar political process that dismissed the gnostic movement as “heresy” in an authoritarian attempt to “strengthen the base.” Join the reading group on Sunday mornings at 9:30 for a conversation on Elaine Pagels’ The Gnostic Gospels throughout September and on The Gospel of Thomas in October.

The idea of sanctuary harkens back to the Hebrew Bible when certain cities were set aside as havens for those being hounded for alleged or accidental crimes. It blossomed in medieval Europe when churches and cathedrals provided safe harbor for those fleeing oppression and the dangers of regime change. Finding Meaning and Spirit in Aging

This day marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One, which officially concluded on the 11th  hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. In honoring our veterans, we will look back at this complicated and devastating conflict, lifting up the music and poetry that it generated and exploring its legacy in our lives today.
