SINGLE PARENTS,AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE AND THE PUBLIC OPTION

January 4th, 2010

You are reading this blog so the chances are you fall into that group called single parents or are an interested party; and it is more likely that you are female. If you are among the more fortunate single parents you made an average of about $31,000.00 gross for the year last year, and that puts you among 27% of  all single parents. The other 83% averaged around $19,000.00 for the year.  We are talking about households with two or more children.

Right now, I am concerned to ask,  how easy is it for persons making $19, 000.00 to $31,000.00 annually to afford health coverage?  I will venture to say, not easy at all;  maybe impossible . And the reformed healthcare system system is not going to make health coverage any more affordable. Everyone will be required to have healthcare but everyone and especially single parents may not be able to afford health coverage.

Could the kind of situation develop where the choice must be made between, say adequate nutrition and paying for health care? It seems that those those who were unable to afford health coverage under the old system will have access but not affordability under the new arragements. It seems that if having health coverage is not going to create an impossible financial burden for those at the lower end of the income scale, and particularly for lower paid single parents who make up the majority of that group, we must have checks and balances to keep costs contained. THE PUBLIC OPTION is the most viable means to achieve that balance.

The political discussion is not over. The people’s representatives are now getting to the final negotiations.Your voice can still be heard. Share your views and support your representatives in the House to get a bill that will be affordable for lower income earners and for single parents in particular.  WE NEED THE PUBLIC OPTION.  Please share your thoughts on this issue.
