Reverend Norman Allen

Our Minister

Reverend Norman Allen joined Davies as part of a unique partnership with Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church during the 2017-18 church year. Following the success of that collaboration, he was welcomed as the congregation’s contracted minister in July 2018.

A graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary and of the chaplaincy program at John Hopkins Hospital, Reverend Norm served as Intern Minister at Cedar Lane for two years, focusing on issues of LGBTQ and Immigrant Justice, which culminated in his coverage of the challenges facing those who are Undocumented and Transgender for Yes! magazine. Other writing credits include work for OnBeing, Tikkun, the Washington Post, and Smithsonian.

A former English teacher, Reverend Norm was a consultant with the Center for Inspired Teaching and founded the Signature in the Schools theatre outreach program. As a playwright, he has seen his work commissioned and produced locally by the Shakespeare Theatre Company, the Kennedy Center,  and Signature Theatre; and in Asia, Eastern Europe, and Britain. His plays In The Garden and Nijinsky’s Last Dance received Helen Hayes Awards.

Reverend Norm, his partner Gary, and their son Isaac share their DC home with two loving pups, who remind them daily of the comfort that comes with unconditional love. For more information check out Reverend Norm’s website and the links below. We invite you to listen to recent sermons, including those from our guest preachers who offer the congregation a range of perspectives and insights.
