At Davies Memorial we enjoy a variety of musical genres, including jazz, classical, choral, folk, popular, and country. We recently welcomed Rick Peralta as our new Music Director and look forward to reveling in his mastery of guitar, banjo and mandolin. We’ll also enjoy special guests, an occasional choir, and the chance to benefit from the talents of our many lay artists, including our very own Davies Ensemble.
Lyrics to all hymns and musical offerings are projected on large screen TVs, giving everyone the opportunity to sing along, or to enjoy the rich complexity of the lyrics as they listen.
Among many beloved hymns, “Spirit of Life” is sung each Sunday and is often accompanied by the children’s sign language interpretation. Enjoy a video demonstration with choral back-up, and an explanation of why we sign it, along with instructions on how to sign it (permission provided by songwriter Carolyn McDade). You can also check-out fun musical moments like a rendition of “I Am Theist, Your Are Humanist,” set to a familiar tune!
Our community is also home to the Davies Concert Series, now in its 47th year of bringing classical music to Prince Georges County. Each season begins with a fundraising event that features the talents of Davies’ own musicians, poets, and dancers of all ages, then continues with a line-up that brings the finest professional musicians to the Davies stage. This year’s series features a special fundraising concert for the Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts on January 20 titled Figaro Meets Fredrick Douglass. All events are followed by a meet-the-artist reception. Tickets are available at the door. For information on season subscriptions check the series’ Facebook page.
